This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of acceptance and commitment therapy on the craving and emotion regulation strategies in patients under treatment of maintenance methadone. The research method was semi-experimental with pre-test -post-test and follow-up design with a control group. The sample consisted of 24 male patients referred to the clinic in the city of Karaj selected through the purposive sampling method and randomly assigned into experimental and control groups. The experimental group got acceptance and commitment therapy and maintenance methadone therapy, while the control group received only maintenance methadone therapy. The data were collected using a craving questionnaire (Salehiet al., 2010) and an emotion regulation questionnaire (Gartz & Roemer, 2008). The data were analyzed by multivariate covariance analysis. The results showed that the treatment based on acceptance and commitment caused a significant reduction (p<0.05) in craving and also improved emotion regulation. Treatment based on acceptance and commitment has favorable practical implications in the treatment and prevention of substance abuse relapse.
